Ultrasound

Dr. Romano’s “Exquisite Care” Medical Spa

There are numerous exciting new applications of ultrasound technology in cosmetic surgery. I have personally embraced these as an important part of my services to patients in my practice. Ultrasound has been used for cosmetic purposes since around the early 1980’s. Widespread therapeutic usage, safety, comfort, precise control and excellent results have made ultrasound an important addition to cosmetic surgery practices such as mine.

What your tissue needs is what determines the mode of ultrasound I utilize. The mechanisms of action of ultrasound should be considered in terms of four categories. First is the thermal effect, which relates to the heat generated into the deeper tissues and especially the collagen, and the benefits derived from this. Second is the mechanical effect, which relates to the high-speed vibrations that act on the tissue just like a micro massage. Third is the cavitation effect. This refers to the production of countless microscopic droplets of oxygen from the vibrational process. Fourth are the biological effects, which include blood vessel dilatation, improved blood flow and circulation, improved lymph flow, muscle relaxation, reduced inflammation, and pain relief.

Ultrasound is offered as a stand-alone procedure or as part of my surgical package. Application of this technology is very specific to the area that needs treatment and the head size, wavelength, power setting, pulsed or continuous mode, and duration of treatment are all specifically selected and customized to your needs. The effectiveness is solely determined by the results you see and feel. Best results are seen in patients that undergo two to three treatments a week early after surgery and taper these as determined by your rate of healing and improvement.

Ultrasound in my practice is used for:

  • Softening breast implant contracture
  • Decreasing swelling early after surgery when applied to the surgical site
  • In combination with exfoliation treatments, it is used to enhance better penetration of topically applied skin care products
  • Softening scars and scar tissue
