Facial Bone Reduction

There is a growing awareness of certain anatomic features that make the face look wider. On occasion this is an ethnic Asian feature, but it can occur in anyone as a characteristic you are born with. Dr. Romano offers a number of creative options to reduce and shape the cheek and jaw area:

  • Bone Reduction: This is the most fundamental treatment, and it can be relatively non-invasive depending on the degree and the area.
  • Cheek Fat Reduction: This is accomplished by liposuction and may be successful if there is an accumulation of fat in this area.
  • Botox: This can be administered into the jaw line if there is an excess of muscle.

Dr. Romano has in-depth experience in bone reduction surgery, having performed many of these procedures with excellent results.

Dr. Romano Explains

Patients notice wideness to the cheeks or angles of the jaw. It may be subtle to the point that patients really are ashamed to consult me about it, but I can clearly see their concern and desire for improvement. The anatomy of the cheek and jaw area under consideration basically consists of enlarged bone and variable degrees of excess fat and muscle that overlie the bone. Therefore, attention must be directed to the bone and sometimes to the overlying muscle and fat to address this problem. There are a number of very creative options available for correction. These bony areas are intimately related to other facial anatomic features that must be considered prior to your surgery. I will coordinate the features of your anatomy with your expectations, formulate a plan with you, and guide you through this process.

In the case of facial surgery for bone reduction, this involves a relatively short procedure under a light general anesthetic and is performed where I do surgery, which is in a hospital setting. The surgery is safe and predictable. There is a small incision inside the mouth, the affected bony area is reduced, and the incision is closed. There is some mild to moderate swelling, and you can return to work in as little as two days and to some physical exercise within the first week.

I have great expertise in bone reduction surgery, and I have performed many of these procedures. I spend a great deal of time discussing your anatomy, listening to your expectations, and interpreting for you what your anatomy and tissues will safely and predictably allow me to do. In addition I consider your body as a whole, and I build a system into every facial surgery that, initially, allows you to recover much more quickly and, secondly, preserves your surgical results. This system includes a special diet, meticulous attention to blood clotting, introductions of vitamins, supplements and skin products, physical training, and knowing what to avoid. Together all of this allows me to create results that are consistently very beautiful, quick to heal, and exceptionally natural. I use minimal incisions, especially in the face, an area of such major importance. I am delighted to surgically provide you with such profound yet natural facial-image changes, ones that have so consistently pleased my patients and changed their lives.
